# What's Inside a BESS? Battery Energy Storage System Components

A containerized battery energy storage system can resemble a shipping container from the outside. Inside, battery chemistry, power electronics, software, and safety equipment work together. Smaller systems may use cabinets, and larger projects may distribute these functions across separate enclosures.

A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores electricity electrochemically and uses controls and conversion equipment to deliver that energy when needed.

Harvest Solar approaches storage as part of a facility's energy strategy. This component breakdown builds on the [BESS basics](https://harvestsolar.com/blog/what-is-a-battery-energy-storage-system-bess-a-beginners-guide), following seven building blocks.

![ChatGPT Image Oct 13, 2026, 09\_47\_03 AM](https://harvestsolar.com/hs-fs/hubfs/ChatGPT%20Image%20Oct%2013%2c%202026%2c%2009_47_03%20AM.png?width=1672&height=941&name=ChatGPT%20Image%20Oct%2013%2c%202026%2c%2009_47_03%20AM.png)

## 1. Battery Cells, Modules, and Racks Store Energy

Battery cells store energy through reversible electrochemical processes. Charging changes the cell's chemical state; discharging releases stored energy as electrical current. Manufacturers combine cells into modules, modules into racks or strings, and racks into the full battery assembly.

## 2. The BMS Monitors and Protects the Battery

The battery management system (BMS) monitors cell voltage, temperature, and electrical current, then estimates state of charge and battery condition. These measurements inform safe charging and discharging limits.

When limits are exceeded, the BMS can issue warnings, request reduced power, or initiate isolation through protective devices. Abnormal readings may provide early warning of a developing thermal problem, but monitoring cannot guarantee that thermal runaway will be prevented.

## 3. The PCS Converts Power Between DC and AC

The power conversion system (PCS) connects the battery's direct-current (DC) electrical output to the alternating-current (AC) electricity used by the grid and most facility loads.

During grid charging, the PCS converts AC to DC. During discharge, it converts DC back to AC. A bidirectional PCS inverter controls power flow according to dispatch commands while respecting battery limits and interconnection requirements.

PCS power ratings determine how quickly energy can be delivered; battery energy capacity determines how much can be stored. Both matter for [peak demand management](https://harvestsolar.com/blog/local-bess-solutions-three-ways-battery-storage-can-lower-energy-costs).

## 4. The EMS Coordinates Battery Operating Decisions

The energy management system (EMS) determines when and how the BESS charges or discharges. The BMS focuses on battery protection; the EMS coordinates operation around facility needs and project objectives.

EMS inputs may include facility load, utility prices, solar forecasts, grid operator signals, and battery status. The controller uses those inputs to dispatch the PCS within the limits established by the battery system.

Applications include peak shaving, energy arbitrage, solar self-consumption, backup reserve management, and frequency regulation. Participation in [grid services](https://harvestsolar.com/blog/unlocking-the-value-of-grid-services-with-battery-energy-storage) depends on equipment capabilities, utility rules, and market eligibility.

For facilities combining storage with [commercial solar](https://harvestsolar.com/commercial), these controls help align available generation with the timing of electricity demand. Savings depend on rates, sizing, losses, and operation.

## 5. Thermal Management Controls Battery Temperature

Thermal management removes heat generated by internal resistance and electrochemical processes during charging and discharging. It can also provide heating when cold conditions would make battery operation unsuitable.

Air cooling uses fans and conditioned airflow. It can offer simpler equipment and maintenance, but achieving uniform temperatures becomes more difficult as heat density increases.

Liquid cooling transfers heat through coolant circuits and cooling plates. It can provide tighter temperature control in dense installations, with additional pumps, plumbing, leak management, and maintenance requirements.

## 6. Safety Systems Address Battery Failure Hazards

Battery systems are designed with safety features to help manage temperature and keep the system operating within its intended limits. Thermal runaway is a condition where a battery cell generates more heat than it can release, making temperature control an important part of battery safety.

Depending on the system, safety features may include temperature and gas sensors, smoke detection, ventilation, fire protection, and automatic shutdown capabilities. These features help identify potential issues and support a safe response when needed.

BESS equipment can also be evaluated to recognized safety standards, such as **UL 9540**, which covers the safety of energy storage systems and equipment. Meeting this standard helps demonstrate that a system has been evaluated for key safety requirements.

Because each safety feature serves a different purpose, they are designed to work together as part of an overall safety plan. Qualified engineers determine the appropriate combination based on the battery system, site conditions, and applicable safety codes.

## 7. Balance of Plant Connects the Whole Installation

Electrical infrastructure can include switchgear, protective devices, transformers where needed, cabling, grounding, and metering. Enclosures, racking, foundations, site access, and civil work provide physical support and environmental protection.

Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and remote monitoring support alarm handling, performance records, and operational oversight. These functions may overlap with an EMS, but monitoring and energy dispatch are distinct responsibilities.

Harvest Solar's [EPC services](https://harvestsolar.com/epc) bring engineering, procurement, and construction together, highlighting why equipment and site requirements belong in the same project scope.
